A tall, athletic student, Matthew is just "using" college as an excuse to "be all he can be" in the Reserve Officers' Training Corps. He feels that he can get a jump on the other grunts by getting into the army through R.O.T.C. It has never occurred to him that maybe he's not bright enough to make it through R.O.T.C., much less through college or be a successful officer in the U.S. Army. Physically, his features are just a little bit "off" (though it would never occur to him, some plastic surgery could really improve his looks). His somewhat abrasive personality often makes others uncomfortable, and his short temper often pushes Matthew into confrontation--sometimes with his R.O.T.C. superiors.
Matthew has a pistol of his own, and a box of ammo (20 left). He keeps the gun well hidden, so he doesn't get into trouble with the college.
